Message From Amy Cohn, CHEPS Associate Director
For many of us at UM, summer means a time to slow down the pace – the calendar clears of meetings, the offices are quiet as students head out of town, and there is suddenly an abundance of parking. For us at CHEPS, it’s just the opposite (except the parking, thankfully). This year we’ve had roughly 40 students working full-time on nearly 20 different projects. The student workroom and other CHEPS spaces are filled with students sharing ideas and skills with one another, the meeting schedule is overflowing, and the level of activity is energizing and anything but calm!
There were far too many project highlights this summer to list them all but I will share a few. The M-Safety project reached a major milestone when they finalized the design of a new patient safety display. There were many design iterations, provider focus groups, and prototype sessions with the display in the simulation center. Now the display is about to be implemented at a unit in Michigan Medicine. Additionally, the Dental Staffing simulation project team completed their work on simulation tools to help the Dental School make decisions about how to best staff their clinics to improve both patient experience and dental student training. And once again a new class of resident trainees started their year at Michigan Medicine this July on rotations determined by the Block Scheduling team.
Personally, I had the chance to share our work on the international stage at the INFORMS International Meeting in Taipei where I delivered a talk titled “Challenges in Residency Scheduling.” While in Taiwan, I was also able to connect with University of Michigan IOE alums Richard Chen and Wanshan Zhu, hike Elephant Mountain, and spend some quality time with my niece, a helpful translator happy to put to good use her four years of high school Chinese, before she heads off to college in the fall.
Of course, it’s important that the summer not be just work, and we at CHEPS recognize the importance of wellness activities and time for rest and reflection. Many of our students had the opportunity to travel or visit family this summer. See our “Where in the World Is CHEPS?” section below for one example, and many more on our website. During the workday, students often take a quick break to enjoy a popsicle from the well-stocked CHEPS freezer. And, students have continued the tradition of regular Thursday socials. Students played volleyball together on North Campus, took a trip to pick blueberries at the Dexter Blueberry Farm, visited the Nichols Arboretum while the peonies were in full bloom, and many more official and “unofficial” social events, giving students from different projects, majors, and stages of their studies the chance to get to know each other better.
And our CHEPS family continues to grow — in a particularly cute way! Two of our alums expanded their own families this summer. Leslie McDonough and her family welcomed Finnegan Robert and Brian Lemay and his family welcomed Owen Atlas.
Finally, I’m happy to share that you’ll be hearing from us more often. Liz Fisher has joined CHEPS full-time as our marketing and communications specialist which means we’ll be sending CHEPS Pulse out monthly from now on.
